Is there a special tool or can anyone give advice on how to get these things in?

My thumbs are numb and very sore

Infinitely easier with the tool, but perfectly possible with a couple of flat blade screwdrivers, although always work inwards with them, towards the glass, as they will slip at some point, and screwdriver blades are not good for paintwork.
