Had a bit of strange tapping noise from my touring about 10 days ago on cold start up, it lasted 15-20 seconds but went away again and Ive not heard anything since.
I remember reading about loose sump bolts a while ago, so I decided to drop the lower sump pan and take a look...

I was expecting a loose bolt but guess whats happened here...

No sign of the stray bolt, but some disturbing debris in the lower pan...

Number 4 crank bearing has seen better days...

And to top it off, Number 3 big end was a little worn 8O...

Amazingly it ran fine with no bottom end noise, other than the slight tapping that prompted me to take the sump off to have a look.

So, the end of that bottom end :(
Ive just spent a long day swapping in another M40 to keep the car on the road, which is really annoying as Ive got an M44 to go in, but Im still waiting on some parts before I can start the conversion.
And this M40 is just as ticky as the last one :x

They never made M40's like they used to!

How did the pickup get so much damage?

Of the 6 upper sump bolts at the front of the pan, there was 2 tight, 2 finger tight and 2 missing completely.
I'm guessing the 2 that were floating around the sump pan got stuck between the pickup and pan - possibly the tapping noise I heard to begin with??

I've heard this can be a problem in the M42, but I guess the M40s also suffer being the same design.
