engine steam clean

is it wise to steam clean an engine? i found a tin of gunk, engine cleaner in my dads shed so i "borrowed" it and was wondering what bits i need to cover up on the engine before giving it a blast.
the only obvious things to me is the alternator and ignition coil, the fuse box has the cover on it and the diagnostic/service light jobby has the screw on cap on it. is there anything else i should cover or avoid scooshing directly, like HT leads? its an m40 engine.
also whats the best thing to use to cover up things?

i tried this on my nova once many moons ago and it didnt start until i sprayed wd40 on everything, but nothing was covered up

Iv'e jet washed my engine (M40) before with no ill effects.

If your worried about the electrics, cover them with bin bags.

a dry steam cleaner is a good way to get dir of dirt.
