If the car cuts out but won't restart, I'd suggest that it's either flooded (blue temp issue) or the fuel pump died somewhere along your journey.
If it's a blue temp issue you can leave it for half an hour, then come back and it'll restart so that you can get home. If there's still no fuel then something's up with your pump. A swift hammer blow can revive a failing one, but you still need to get access to it. It's IN the tank, under the rear seat and hidden by an access panel.
For a better answer, we need to know the age and model of the car, and how long you'd driven it (5 mins, one hour....), and any other symptoms.

By far the most likely.Grrrmachine wrote:something's up with your pump. A swift hammer blow can revive a failing one, but you still need to get access to it. It's IN the tank, under the rear seat and hidden by an access panel.
Pull out the fuel pump relay, and link together pins 30 and 87 of its socket with a short piece of wire. This should make the fuel pump run continuously, and it will easily be heard without the engine running, if it's NOT faulty. If it is stalled, then you will be greeted with silence, of course, at which point you should hit the top of it, and hopefully it will start up.

Thanks guys, I read the wiki and bridged together the 30 & 87 and tried again and it didnt work! So I put the relay back in, done the windows up and was about to leave! I thought I'd give it one more try and miraculous it started! It's never happened before and hasn't played up since!
What could it have been maybe I it happens again?
Thanks

And also when I bridged it, the lights came on? Is that normal?

Worth opening the access panel to the pump 4 x Philips screws and making sure the plug hasn't worked loose - it happened to me once.

Whatever you bridged, it wasn't the pump relay, or you didn't bridge the right pins!TobagoBlueBM wrote:And also when I bridged it, the lights came on? Is that normal?
Chances are it is the pump that's acting up, and it may go for weeks without happening again, but the intervals between will get shorter and shorter, until it refuses to go at all.
