Hi, after checking the wiki I have repaired my seat backs! Problem is I disconnected the gas damper from the mount at the top of the seat base, thinking welding may damage it.
I have tried levering, compressing and pushing the rod back to its mount but to no joy. Is there a way to do this or can I do away with it as I can't get the darn thing in!!

Compress the damper in a vice, then you could try a cable tie,but I think you will find it difficult to locate a tie so that the damper remains compressed whilst you fit it....
What I did was to use a vice and offer up the seat bracket to it,fiddly but it worked for me.
Another way that I have done this was to fit the top of the damper and use a bit of scrap wood with a steel plate on top to raise the lower part of the damper up,then I got 'er indoors to sit on the seat and I guided the lower part home.....that was very fiddly!

Thanks for the tips, I got the bugger in with the back of a claw hammer and tapped home with the flat face of a pair of pilers. Took a few attempts, and the seat is tight as, bar mechanism movement. Thanks e30 zone!
