Can anyone give me the socket size for the rear hub retaining nut and the best size socket for the drive shaft bolts where they connect to the diff. Search on my phone and real OEM is a PITA and ill be at halfords in about an hour.

I'll stand corrected but believe hub bolts are 36mm

Not atempted rear hubs, yet, but drive shaft to diff flange will be either a male torx bolt or an allen headed bolt,I have seen both types on similar aged E30!
Torx is an E14,I think, cannot remember the allen key size, but you will need either one that can be used with a conventional socket or a bloody long one!

If you have the Torx type bolts, throw them away and replace with either an allen headed bolt or a 'ordinary' bolt.

The diff bolts are the alan head type bit pretty rusty. I reckon the might need replacing.

I ran out of time to pick up any sockets today so if anyone has a definitive list so I can go tomorrow would be great.

I have a small set of allen sockets in a little metal box,one end fits the bolt, the other fits a 10mm socket!

Sorry I cannot be of more use, this time. :D

Allan key bolt heads for the driveshafts are 8mm. The rear hub nuts are 30mm and the front hub nuts are 36mm.

Cheers malc, bring your little metal box on the Scottish meet and we can check if you were right.

Thanks everyone else as well, off to halfords tomorrow as there the only place open and so far my halfords toolset hasn't let me down once so quality seems to be decent.

Plenty of heat on the bolts i used a heat gun it did a great job.socket with Allan key tapped in with hammer as above, then a metal tube for extra leverage on the ratchet.came off nicely for me :-)
