Front end noise (high piched whuring sound)

There is a horrible annoying noise from the front driver side of my e30 316i (like a high pitched woooooo)
it starts off quiet and gets louder as i drive,I thought maybe wheel bearings but every time i tap the brakes the noise stops for a few seconds then starts again, has any one experienced this or does anyone have a diagnosis?

i don't want to take her to a garage and have jonny greasemonkey make me pay for something i don't need.

sounds like power steering pump or belt. check the PS fluid level first.
