i have an m20 engine from '87 325sport that has been lying idle for a few years.. it only did e few k miles after full professional rebuild.. are there likely to be any major issues getting it running again?

wouldnt say so, my m20 sat unused for 3 years and turned after a few cranks. it hadnt had a rebuild either

Be sure to change the cam belt at some point and the oil/ filter may be worth doing for what it costs.

take the spark plugs out and spray some wd40 down the bores and put some fresh oil in before turning it over. turn it over by hand a few times aswel
