You should be using studs in the head and putting nuts on them, not bolts. They can be tricky, you sometimes need to space the manifold off the head so you can start the nut flush against the manifold flange then tighten it down.

Studs will also overcome the gasket issue.

that what i meant, the ones that came off the standard manifold..

its becoming really hard work im sure its not meant to be this difficult and annoying....

some of the stud have nuts on them already, but trying to line them up and tighten and hold the manifold and the gasket all at once is whats getting to me....

At a guess, the flange depth of the BTB and the standard manifold will be different,so re-using these will almost certainly lead to an exhaust leak at best and a stripped thread in the head at worst.

New studs and proper manifold nuts will cost pence from GSF/ECP.

Take out all the old studs from the head, screw in 6 new ones into the head suitably spaced, place gasket in position then manouver fannymould over studs and hand tighten new nuts down. Now manouver the remaining studs in place, tighten them using the double nut principle, remove double nuts and replace with new nuts and torque the whole lot up.

E30 885 cylinder head exhaust studs are all the same size

I am assuming that you have previously removed all the studs and the threads run free

Give em a really good soak in wd40 overnight and be careful removing them.

Always use new studs when removing manifolds and give them a coat with copper grease when you put them in

In an ideal world you would have ALL the studs in the head before the manifold goes anywhere near the engine!!

This is just my two penny worth.

I've had the BTB of and on my turd a few times. Its easier if you lift both section in by putting the front piece in first but not onto the studs then the rear section before actually fitting onto the studs.

I have no steering rack or steering linkage in so there is plenty of room to get my sausage fingers in.

Could you not remove the linkage to gibe you more room?

All the studs need to be on the head, if the manifold doesn't fit then return it.

btb,are b@stads!!! how can they design these manifolds the way they have.... just to get it in, you have to life one side of the engine up, remove anything else that comes in the way of it getting in...

anyway, i put all new studs in the head 1st, apart from one that wasnt come out, after lots of swearing and going red, messing about undoing and redoing the nuts, managed to get the nuts onto the studs...

the hours are just adding up, on one stupid manifold :D

Having to tilt an engine to fit a performance manifold is something that you should account for when doing the job. The M20 has so much clearance around it, I think you would have burst a blood vessel if you had to fit anything else.

I recently converted my studs to Ti with 12point Silver plated nuts, you can see the Ti studs have a allen key recess making the job that bit easier!

Mine went in easy. All you need to do is unbolt the OS engine mount, lift the engine up that side and its goes on.

Don't do any of the nuts up until they are all on and started so the there is movement the once all started, do them up.

I take it you are aware of Ti's propensity to gall?

Absolutely, this is why the studs are just the right length, the nuts are silver plated and Nikal paste is used.

A very common combination in motorsport.

Thanks Morat! :)
