M42 gearbox, E36 same as E30?

Hello guys, my gearbox is on its way out syncros on first and second are getting worse so I was wondering if I can use the gearbox out of my e36 I have sitting in the corner?

I know it would bolt up to the engine but the question I ask is, are the ratios the same and would my probshaft be the correct length? is there much difference between the E30 and E36's?

While I'm on the topic are they also as strong? I know the M42 engine got weaker in the E36 but did the gearbox change?

I think people use them in M50 conversions but to you have to have a M42 gearbox out on an E30 or does it not much matter?

No, different box with completely wrong ratios and it won 't fit.

e36 box will bolt into you car but you will need to slide the prop splines out so much that you can't preload the centre bearing.
also,
it uses different sized box to prop guibo,
the gear linkage needs modification,
you need the e36 clutch slave clyinder,
the e36 box has a direct top gear so at 70mph you will be doing over 4000rpm.

had one in my rally car for a year and no problem with failures.

buy an e30 gearbox instead.
