literally just finished mine and am loving it to bits! it all depends on if you are planning to keep the car or rag it and sell it on really!
m50 or m20? if m50 you need fairly deep pockets and requires additional parts, m20 is quite easy plug and play with the exeption of pin 20, if the m20s out you would ideally want to do all the basics if your planning to keep it, gaskets, sump gasket... new clutch and shifter bushes, new engine mounts etc... it defo adds up in price though!
I had a 316i mechanically wise was fucked up! everything needed doing so I did it, it took approx 3 months, its a bit pointless doing all the work firing it up going for a drive and it handling like a dog, I did it all and first drive was wicked!
If you just want the engine swap you could do it within a few days, but you would obviously need the other core parts such as propshaft, and a lower ratio diff, exhaust, and obv all m20 ancillaries, it is also reccomended to change it over to the 51mm struts and vented brakes,
the m40 is easy enough to remove and i did it without any prior of lifting engines in about 3 hours with another pair of hands!
