Hi all
Have a question about e39 525, I know this is e30 forum but some of you guys are active between other forums so maybe you'll know.
Here it goes
I swaped the steering wheel to left hand drive on 2002 525 e39 petrol and used rack from 1999 e39 525d, Now on the steering wheel's shaft there's a mark that needs to be aligned with the one on steering wheel it self. Steering wheel's shaft can be mounted on the rack only in one position, after that steering wheel is about 90 degrees out to the right side. If I start driving car and it reaches certen speed the traction control light comes on meaning that system is off. After scaning with computer there is a foult code "Steering angle incorect". So realy my question is: is right hand drive steering wheel's shaft not compatible with left hand drive rack or is it because this rack is not from "face lift" model and angles are different?
Please any thoughts will be apriciated.

Can't answer any of your questions regarding compatibility of parts, but a quarter of a turn of the steering wheel is a fairly small adjustment in the track rods.
Does your steering wheel turn an exactly equal number of turns in each direction from the position that the car drives straight, or from the position that the wheel is straight? If the former, then check that the track rods have a similar amount of thread showing outside of the track rod ends at each side.

Yes I tried this, it turns equal number of turns to both sides from where the car drives strait not where the steering wheel is strait.
For now I made car wheels strait and then just mounted the steering wheel as strait as it looked to me (not on the marks that should lineup) so I am able to see speedo when I'm driving.
I think that the steering angle position sensor is on the steering shaft it self thats why there is the mark on it that needs to lineup with the one on steering wheel, but the shaft can only be mounted in one position on to the rack thats why I think that maybe parts not compatible cause the shaft is UK version and rack is from Europe (left hand).
Maybe it is posible to recalibrate cars computer somehow so it can accept new angle of steering wheel?
Thanks for your input, keep them ideas coming please

Various electronic systems on these cars have to be 'coded' to enable them to communicate with other modules, if they are replaced. Could this be the problem?

I had a problem like this with a golf I changed the rack on. Anyway, the systems are all the same, probably both made by bosch. The traction control light comes on, because as you turn a corner, the outer wheel travels futher than the inner, which the ABS reads. If this doesn't correspond with the steering angle provided by the sensor, then it thinks something is wrong with the system.
Basically, the sensor on the steering column has to read 0 degrees, and the rack has to be central. Easy when there is a master spline, as it can only be 360 degrees out, but not so easy when there isn't one.
So you need to use live data to find 0 degrees on the steering coloumn, and see where your wheels are pointing. You might find your coloumn is 360 degrees out or something. You also need to get it tracked perfecto. The steering wheel can then be sorted out when it's all straight.

Have you tried to calibrate the steering angle sensor?
