gear linkage.

Broke down tonight in my 320i. R.A.C bloke says its the gear linkage. Its felt a bit notchy lately and then tonight it got stuck in gear and the gearstick went all loose. Does this sound like linkage? Im a no mechanic so gonna have to pay garage to do work, is it a big/expensive job? Cheers.
