I have a nice little growl/graunch coming from my diff when turning at slow speeds ( POssibly still happens at speed, just too much wind/road noise to cover) I think it's an LSD unless the previous owner sold it and put an open one in there, BUt it seems to be able to drift well.

Question is.. Will i be able to rebuild it? Or is it a case of a fluid change or similar?

They can be reuilt, but there is some very special thing/tool that needs to be done/used to/on it during the rebuild.

A simple fluid change may solve the problem....

That can be a symptom of old/wrong oil in the LSD. (Creaking and grinding when turning slowly on light throttle) The correct stuff is Castrol SAF-XJ. The only place I managed to get it was http://www.superformance.co.uk/. They didnt want to mail order it, but did after persusion. They are a Ferarri Dino specialist, and apparently the Dino gearbox needs it.

If you contact oilman off this forum he will point you in the direction of some Redline diff oil thats better OE IIRC, plus it can be posted

Changed mine to genuine BM LSD stuff, took away the noise and its nice and quiet now. Im trying the Redline stuff next time i change as its suppose to be uber slippy

HTH :)

supposedly the stuff at the dealers is the castrol. IIRC it has the BMW standard on the bottle. But I remember something on the site here suggesting that the dealers dont always use the correct stuff for LSD's
