Hi ,

Next problem is coming to light .....

Sometimes when I start the car ('86 325 cab) and turn the wheel I get this growling-like noise coming from the steering. Happens more when it is cold and damp but disappears after a while. Also got a funny irregular ticking noise that sounds like it may be coming from the steering pump.
So is the pump on the way out or is it a problem with the rack ??

Just went to out to the car and ..... now growling and grumbling with every touch of the wheel and having checked the steering fluid , yesterday was normal pink colour and it is now turned to a frothy mass filling the entire reservoir.
Thanks in advance ,

i'd suggest you check the pas drive belt is in good nick and tight enough...

otherwise, i suspect it could be the pas pump but i've not played with these before so can't offer any useful advice here!

I'd go with the pump too, changed one with the same exact problems, seemed worse when car was cold, wasn't giving the steering any assistance when cold, but once the car was warming up it got better, changing the pump sorted it.
