i saw somewhere that someone had adapted an electric power steering pump from a toyota MR2 to run with the e30 (or e46 actually) configuration
i understand this means a motor to compress te fluid and not a motor to actually assist the rack itself?
any ideas?
cheers,
Matt

Matt,
Hope you got the beam sorted ok?
With regards to the MR2 power steering, well its very outdated, its heavy, its complicated and its not that efficient.
I have fitted this to my car: http://www.bmwm3shop.de/product_info.ph ... ering.html
The pump is also found on the Mercedes A Class, BMW motorsport as well as many other racing teams use this exact pump just with a different firmware. Its a neat little unit, all self contained, no telemetry sensors and only three wires and two hoses to connect. I had a baracket fabricated by a local engineering firm and Karan welded it to the nearside Chassis rail where the fuel filter is normally located on a four pot.
You can see the top of the pump reservoir it under the Airbox in this photo.

hello mate!
yeah just waiting on a set of tabs from danthe he has to have some made up, then everything is ready i think!
ah i see that sounds a little too complicated and expensive for me i think!
did you notice a bit more poke due to less pumping losses?
cheers,
Matt

I have these tabs sitting doing nothing if you are in a hurry I could post you some in the mean time?
Not only was the throttle response improved so was the top end, the steering has much more feel to it also and I can switch it off from the drivers seat. Good for wet conditions.

If you can find a cheap A Class pump from a specialist breaker (£150+VAT is a cheap one) then you can enjoy 80% of the benefits of buying one from BMW MS for €800.

Yes thats correct, the red is 50A battery live, the brown is ground and the blue (IIRC) one is +12v. Some people connect that to the alternator or you can switch it.
