Cold start problem

I have a great 89 325i sport perfect in every way except that it is a reluctant starter when first started. Turn the ignition and it cranks for 3-4 seconds before cranking into life. At this point there is an obvious smell of burnt petrol. Switch it off and start again after this and she starts first time every time. Leave the car for any time and start again and the lazy starting returns. This starting problem is frustrating particularly as the car runs and drives 100% once started. I am hoping someone out there recognises the symptoms and can advise the cure. Thanks
