Was looking around at the prices of e30 blowers and turbos and was shocked at the prices. Was wondering if anyone has or knows of someone who has taken say a supercharger off a scrapped merc and modified it to work with an e30 motor, would this be possible.

yeah i know haha. " watches one roll past "

its probably one of my daft ideas that shouldnt have escaped my head but i just thought if theres blowers fitted to so many stock mercedes of a similar engine size surely it wouldnt be too hard to mod one for even a small bit of power gain

It's not the cost of the blower that makes turbo conversions expensive. It's the custom manifold and strengthening the engine to cope with the increased forces. You can pick up an old 324TD snail for 50 quid if you just wanted a little bit of boost.

Useful reply up there

What lump is it going on?

Someone had luck nailing a eaton of a new shape mini to an m42.

I would be looking at turbo though. Generally easier to get working, less strain on the lump and a lot of information about. Fire away, I might be able to answer a few questions for you as I'm amassing funds to boost my m50

as above, i'm sure someone has done a cooperS charger. seems like the obvious candidate for a smaller engine. theyre pretty common, not very expensive, and with a suitable pulley make 200+ bhp when attached to the 8v 1.6 in the MINI.

the problem, as mentioned is all the fabrication, one off parts and general 'tinkering' for want of a better word to get it all running. it won't take long at all to have spent as much as you could do a tried and tested, factory reliable m52 conversion.
cheers,

harry

Here we go:

http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... c&t=118743

I seem to remember there being at least one other user doing it too. I think the superchargers just ran out of puff though and needed something bigger. But that is a detailed build thread of what you would need to get into.

As said, FI isn't for the faint hearted. If you are set on it, do it like I am. I'm just part collecting at the moment, keep a keen eye out for second hand setups and components. This way you use decent quality stuff without going overboard. The biggest cost to factor in is the custom stuff, manifold and exhaust system will set you back at least 1500 all in, management and mapping is another big monetary blow.

If you are competent on the spanners it is essentially quite straight forward nuts and bolts but you really need to understand the way a FI engine works, and never cut corners! On anything! There are plenty of little bits which often get forgotten about and this can/will be curtains for your engine.

I'm in no rush to get mine built, just trying to get all the components together and get it right first time. As said many times, research! And when you think you have it all worked out, do some more research!

what steve said :thumb:

nice work on the new section steve

im telling you now boost is addictive and youll just want more
i was running approx 300bhp on my m20 modest 10 psi now ive got a forged bottom end capable of 650 -700 bhp just because i can

but joking aside i did all mine myself and saved alot of money mind you ive put 10 bags into mine and im still spending
you will have to fab alot of the stuff because simply they dont make the bits for these as been said turbo would be the easier option and easiest to do
and dont cut corners
spend more money on good management and tuning ,
tuning is everything on these engines

Wow thanks for the links and all the advice. I can see that there isnt really going to be a cheap way to do this. The reason id like a supercharger is A it can be turned on and off, so i can save fuel in town then when i get out of aberdeen flick the switch and stomp it home. B turbo lag doesnt appeal and i cant be bothered fannying around with boost control valves and all that tryna fine tune between decent boost and blowing my pistons through the bonnet.

from what i see i would need to first get the engine prepared for the boost, manifold and exhaust would need to be of a higher grade material to handle heat and pressure? id then need to get the engine mapped to handle the boost and run properly.

u mentioned above a 324td snail could give a little boost, would i need to do LOADS to fit that? surely a small amount of boost wouldnt put the engine under too much strain

Ha ha ha sorry but you can not turn a blower on and off you've been watching to many movies this aint mad max there belt driven hence running all the time It's just there power delivery is different

Standard BMW engines can take a lot more than what you think I've seen standard m20 lumps pushing 475 bhp I think you need to do some proper research

i have a rotrex supercharger on my 2.7. f.i as said many times above is well addictive and yes,"spend the money on good parts if not the best" unfortunately I've done mine twice.first time wasn't all that good with many problems. now sorted with a new charger, pipe work and i treated it to a dta s80pro ecu and loom.
my advice to you would be, set yourself a bhp target and build it to be reliable. don't get greedy and think your car will turn out to be a monster, i might be for a few miles but it will go pop. if its big power you want then i hope you have deep pockets :D
like ross2009-ive done 10 large. great when she works but a fucker when she don't

good luck with the path you choose and don't forget, were all here if you need us.

god dammit i thought chuck norris was being factual!! hahaha
alright well the fact the blower is always running and lag free is appealing.

its just the 2 litre motor i have in just now cos my 2.5 went bang. i want to try and get 2-220 horses. i dont want loads of power but i want a small gain. i was thinking maybe running a lumpier cam, 2.5 intake, a chip and then a small turbine or blower aswell as some porting/printing and polishing could get me to around there

It's been said time and time again; you can't do anything to the m20b20 engine. And considering the amount of effort Hartge and Alpina put into the M20 engines, and they couldn't get over 200hp, then you won't be doing so any time soon without veerrrrry deep pockets.

thats alot of work for a little gain and plus the 2lt wont hold up as much a 2.5 because the late m20 lump is 8.8-1 which is pretty perfect for boost

just stick another 2.5 in it and do that

thats what il do then ross. boy i knows selling a 2.5 lump with high comp pistons and a lumpy cam pretty cheap so i think il bolt that in. iv also already got a chipped 2.5 ECU that apparently bumps it up about 15bhp

be the ultimate sleeper as its a 316 ( it does have upgraded suspension and brakes before anyone says )

i wouldnt advise putting boost tho that
if you do 1 it might go pop or 2 very minimal boost

what would make it blow the chip or the pistons/cam?

i was speakin to my old man about it and he reckoned if i was gunna boost it high comp pistons probably wasnt a great plan?

your dad is spot on the idea of going forced induction is to raise the compression under boost if you were to start with a high comp engine the cr will go thro the roof if you start with a low cr then it would equal it sort of

its the compression ratio that would make it pop
but having said that i have seen turboed high comp engines

aaah right, so i either choose natural power ( high comp pistons and porting etc. ) or go for boost which will give bigger gains. i need to sit and have a serious think about this. thanks for the help man
