whats the yellow plug that plugs into the back of the instruments?

i've got an 87 318i and dont seem to have a wire that has a yellow plug on it

thought so :). the only other issue i've got is the fuel gauge. the only thing i can think off is tge new cloout of an m40 and mines an m10 :/
