Following on from my previous topic, I find myself really wanting an X308 Jag. I'm aware of the issues (Nikasil, tensioners, gearbox oil etc), & don't really see them as reasons not to buy - just to be careful. However, if a really nice X300 came up, would I be silly to ignore it just because I want the V8?? Or are either just silly ideas in general?! Thoughts on a postcard...

A good 308 is a better car than a 300 BUT the potential for financial ruin/one way ticket to China is MUCH higher on the V8s :(

300s drive really well and even the 3.2 is acceptable, I just really despise that nasty XJ40 councilfest dash that the 300s are blighted with :(

If you go for a 300 you might as well hold out for a supercharged one, they don't seem to hold much more value.

I could live with the dash (although the 308 is far nicer), but I don't know about those two missing cylinders! Something about a straight six with an auto box doesn't seem right, where it'd be fine on the V8. :?

Given a compression test on a v8, later tensioners & a gearbox oil change, are they still a nightmare waiting to happen? & any preference for the earlier or later auto box?

If I came across a tidy XJR that hadn't been thrashed (!), clearly that'd be the way forward. But in the real world, I reckon the NA lumps would be more than adequate.
