Mine has stopped working, could it just be a blown bulb or something more sinister.

There's no known common faults affecting the low fuel warning system, other than a damaged level sensor caused by someone trying to remove a fuel pump without removing the sensor first, but this will affect the gauge as well.
It's very unusual for the bulb to have blown, but it's an bulb with a filament, so it can fail.
Pull the three pin plug off of the fuel pump, and use a piece of wire to short together every combination of two of the pins in it with the ignition on.
Out of the three permutations, one should make the fuel gauge read at least half, one should do nothing, and the third should make the bulb light,

As you suggested, I shorted together the connections on the plug and the bulb lit up.So would the fault be somewhere round the fuel pump area.

Can only be a duff level sender unit then.
Remove the four small nuts and the washers under them, and lift the sender unit straight up and out. Have a container handy; it will leak fuel.
All E30 sender units that go with the in tank pump (i.e. facelift) are the same.

Is the sender connected to the pump or is a separate unit.(Sorry if its a stupid question).

Sender is mounted in the middle of the top of the pump frame. Pump can't be removed without removing it first, and many senders have met their end by muppets attempting to do just that without removing it.
