Airbox help

I have a e36 m43 in my e30 and runs great but it has a cone filter fitted which i dont like. I have a stock airbox from a e30 318 but it doesnt fit. The induction pipe from the manifold is too long and the airbox sits to far back in the engine bay. How do i get round this? Is there no way of fitting a airbox with a e36 m42 manifold?
