Hi guys,
Just wondering if it's normal (?) for a 15yr old car to have scaling on the rear diff housing? Also the underside too. How hard is it to clean off or will I have to replace the parts?

It would be quite normal for the housing to have some scaling on it, but what you have to remmeber is, if you remove the old scaling, it will expose more new metal to corrode, making the casing thinner still.....
I am thinking about the same thing, removing the diff, cleanig it up,giving it a lick of red oxide, then a nice coat canary yellow.

Pete don't care about colour, He would shag a rainbow if he could find the end of it....

I've had diffs that i've attacked with a chipping hammer and air powered descaler, and ended up ankle deep in rust. Never punctered a casing yet though.
Yes, the metal is thinner, and you're exposing fresh metal, but I would think the object of descaling is to prepare for a good painting session.
