Is the 320 ECU the same as the one for the 325 with a different Chip in it?

The post facelift 6 pot Ecu's are supposed to be the same but with a different chip.
But I have a 1988 320i auto cab ecu that will not fire up with a 1989 325i chip inside.
The 320i ecu I have is the older double circuit board affair with different firmware whereas the 325i chip is from the later single board ecu.
All the single board ecu's are the same but trying to find out which is which without opening them up is near impossible.
