steering keeps locking

hello guys, i tried searching for this but cannot find the answer. whilst driving my steering some times get stuck in one position. (dangerous? i no!!) it does not take force at all to move it but i have to kinda yank it. also towards the top of the shaft its squeeking. i just changed the steering rack for the mot but it was doing this befor the change aswell. its a 89 325i. do i need to grease somthing?

I would look very carefully at the steering linkage from the bottom of the column to the rack pinion.Within this coupling is a rubber guibo,these fail with age.The engine mounts failing can also cause the exhaust manifold to foul this coupling.
You mentioned that you have just swapped the steering rack,you did mount the replacement correctly,in the same holes that the old one came out off?
