Hi, I've recently advertised my car on the trader website. ive had loads of interest via email heres the weird bit. ive had 3 ppl from other countries offering me cash for it. I'd normally discard the offers but i need the cash like now.
does this sound dodgy to you lot?
or are they simply importers with an interest?
has anybody else sold a car via this method?
Give me your opinions!
foreigners! dodgy or not?

I'd personally avoid them but if you're in a hurry for the cash then by all means take it. But I'd want to take the cash (sterling of course) to the bank and have it verified as legit notes before I released the car

Pass. I've never had to deal with one.
If you get legit cash in the quantity you want then I'd go for it.
Don't forget to fill out the V5 for export though.
Cheers,
Iain T

Personally, I'd avoid them, if you had an E30 M3 or other LHD vehicle I could understand it, as a lot of the Germans are looking for nice examples over here, as we've imported all the nice ones!
As Iain said though, unless you speak to a person face to face, and you get to see the cash in your hand, don't even bother.

Ask yourself the question-
"Is my car so special that some-one overseas would want it?"
If not don't even respond to any sort of offer
If it is-make sure you are given notes verified by a Bank
Never accept a cheque-even if the buyer is prepared to wait for clearance-the banks can still bounce a cheque after the clearance period.
Under no circumstances accept payment via Bidpay or Western Union
In short
Unless you are really desparate avoid like the plague

avoid them there are too many scams ie
they send you 2 much money and ask you to send a cheque back with the difference then there cheque bounces and yours you sent clears..you lose
they send what looks a legit bankers draft you pay it into your bank release the car and it turns out forged ...you lose
you play it carefully ...pay the cheque/draft in ...the bank says 5 days ,later it clears you are relieved the money is in your account you release the car 2-3 days later the bank contacts you and says it turns out the draft was a forgery and they pass on the loss to your account....you lose
he is over on a plane to get your car ...with cash but states the local bank cant exchange his cash (qty is to large) will you take his own countries cash....he shows you the exchange rate ...you think you will even make a bit ...but all the cash is forged and you dont know what the genuine currency should look like to top it all the police call at your address as they want to know how you have large quantities of foreign currency..this could be after you have been arrested
is your car uk spec ie right hand drive ...why would they want a rhd car
he may not even be abroad but in the uk trying it on
i could go on but you have to tread very carefully ...good luck

i put my celica gt4 on ebay a few months back after no joy in autotrader. A bloke from sweden clicked the buy it now button turned up round mine the following weekend with pounds sterling and it was all gd.
It may be a genuine offer just make sure you get the sterling and have it checked by the bank before you release the car.

I have read all your threads, specially due to the fact that it sais foreigners! dodgy or not?, and couldn't believe what I heard...
-There are is as much 'dodginess' in UK as there is abroad, if not more (highest criminality levels)
-Perhaps the seller abroad is prepared to pay the sum ???-as the swedish guy in the example above- no questions asked and maybe yes, he wants your car even though is right hand drive. I will tell you why: because in UK the things are undervalued money-wise, i.e. E30's, and its a way of getting a car cheap to get the parts you need.
-Because THERE IS NOT MUCH EBAY ACTIVITY OUTSIDE UK, due to pleople not getting rid of some things as easily, and maybe the UK ebay is a tasty and broad market because of this.
To get started with...
I am from Spain, and will take my english E30 with me to Spain when I come back whether is right or left hand drive, because the pleasure is the same, and wouldn't consider myself dodgy for that.
I am not offended, I am just gobsmacked at the fact that under this title you have called dodgy to potential buyers abroad. Think twice, you may end up living abroad because the goverment is applying inflated taxes and insurance on your cars... The southern spanish coast is an example
Cheers

Likewise here in Ireland. 325sports are usually a lot rougher and go for a lot more than if I were to travel to the UK for one.
Just becuase someone if from overseas interested in your car doesnt make it a scam, these people can be even more of an enthusiast than the normal punter as their willing to actually put time effort and money into sourcing the right car.
