I don't think they're likely to gain anything for a while, and if try do it'll only really be the mintiest and the special editions. They're just too common and have already dropped too low to recover.

They have a terrible image, but are great cars imho, but they're always going to be in the shadow of both e30 m3 and e46 m3 which are pretty much universally loved. The sheer number of e46 m3s and they're values still falling is always goin to cap the topend e36s. I've already seen e46 m3s dropping under £7k 8O
cheers,

dont know anything about either tbh, but prefer the e36 looks over the e46, that yellow was very striking to look at, whats the terrible image about then ?

they tend to appeal to tracksuit wearing, gold chain toting types who also like cheap subarus, and wannabe drug dealers.

it doesnt help that every town is littered with rotten small engined e36s with replica m3 wheels and M badges all over the place.

to most people they just don't look special enough, it's the only m3 that you can make a base model car look like with simple bolt on parts, but then for a lot of people thats part of the appeal, a more subtle car theyre not affraid to use because parts are so plentifull. i have also read reviews that have been very favourable towards the e36, saying it's a superb all rounder with all the performance you need in a useable practical, fun car which is perfectly suited to the size of british b-roads.

a lot of people on here also hate them becaue theyre the model that replaced the e30, and marked the start of the modern bmw look.
cheers,

They will never be sought after like the e30 m3, but prices seem to have dropped as low as they ever will, If anything they are on the up slightly. I have bought a couple of usable 3.0l cars for around the £2k mark in the past. I cant seem to find any cheap ones now. I personally like them as they are understated  A nice evo saloon is a good family wagon that will out perform most stuff with out shouting look at me! Unless its yellow :D Insurance is not nice due to the sovereign ring wearing, arse out, hoodies that Harry mentions.

One passed me in Belfast yday. It sounded like someone had poured a bag of bolts into the cylinders. 8O

I sold my 1995 M3 Coupe a few months ago, it had about 58k miles on it (which is about average for Jersey) I got £4650 for it, I liked it but a few things pissed me off.

They're nice cars but won't set your world alight, stupidly good on the motorway though.

As for value because they don't really stand out as something very very special then I think you'll have a long wait for them to become sought after but I'm sure it'll happen but if it does then its just because they're old and RWD as opposed to any particular merit, I think that as car design and technology moves forward then the gap between a 20 year old car and a five year old car will be very small, after all the E36 is twenty years old now yet it doesn't really drive/feel like an old banger.
I do think a nicely lowered E36 on BBS split rims looks very nice mind.

the trouble with the e36 m3 is that it was just a bit too good an allrounder, so it doesnt stand out as anything special. the e30 m3 was light, lively, buzzy and fizzing with energy which begged you to drive it harder. great if youre in the mood, but not so good on the school run or sending the mrs to the shops...

the e36 on the other hand instantly feels heavier, quieter, smoother and more refined, as if all its responses have been dulled down to make it a bit more normal.

push past that though, and the e36 comes alive. get past the initial slack, load the suspension up, get the engine past 6500rpm and it suddenly comes alive. the mass shrinks, it transforms from a slightly agricultural 3 series into a porsche hunter.

like the e30 m3 you have to drive it hard to get the best out of it, but unlike the e30 it doesn't encourage you to, it's happy just to cruise along in comfort.

also worth remembering that it's probably one of the last proper mass produced performance cars unsullied by driver aids, or overun by electronics. sure it has toys, leccy windows and roof, digital climate control etc but the throttles are still linked directly to the pedal with a cable controlling 300bhp, no traction control or stability control other than your arms and legs, just abs to fall back on should things really go tits up. and i like that in a car :D
cheers,

harry

One day I will have a M3 EVO. Love these cars.
Isn't the image of drug dealer still around the E30? Probably why coppers still pull me over...
One day the E36 Will be a classic, the EVO's for sure.

I Swapped my e30 for a e36 m3 last year

I didnt really appreciate the drive or looks, sold it after 4 months and didnt look back.

It was rapid and I had it up to the limit 155mph, It was also good on petrol was getting 30+ mpg.
But it felt a little numb/disconnected to me compared to the e30, heavy and less ability to handle.

I spoke to Ant(A-tech) before I bought one and he said he never rated them and he wouldnt bother, and everyone knows he knows his BMW's.

The image has been ruined by chavs and because the prices have dropped even to £2500
alot of chavs have been getting them hands on them.

I mostly do urban driving so I came back to the e30 and bought a sport. If I was doing alot of long distance driving I probably would have appreciated it.

there's no way i'd want one if most of my driving was around town! clutch and accelerator are too firm, and they dont even sound very nice unless you can properly open them up. e30s are much nicer to just cruise around in, window down.
