help,

my little 316i has benn sitting up for a while whilst i played with my rally mk2 escort (now sold).
I have now got noisey tappets and will be replacing them.
does anybody have any experience of changing them and also are there any pitfalls to avoid.
any help would be most welcome.
thanks ajay.

the m40 has hydraulic tappets and cant be adjusted, so replacing them involves new tappets and possibly a cam 8O

TBH its a bit expensive to do all that (about Ԛ£250+)

I'd start by taking the rocker cover off and checking the camshaft for signs of visible wear

next i'd remove the oil spray bar (wavy pipe!!!!) and clean it thoroughly in warm soapy water.

then i'd change the oil and put it all back together and run it for a couple of weeks. And change the oil again.

costs maybe Ԛ£30 all in.

hint-thicker oil=quieter tappets, but more likely to clog the spraybar.. try a coulpe and find a balance

good luck!
