Had someone show up yesterday with a "squeaking sound" from the rear of their E46 328i.
Crouching, so that I could see underneath the car as he did a hill start in my yard confirmed my suspicions, as I could see the diff. moving vertically a couple of inches!
Anyone know what BMW's current attitude is towards this fault? FOC repair, subsidised repair, or "you're on your own, sunshine"?

I have an answer for this but you would probably dismiss it.

Been doing a little research of my own since I first posted. Seems like over ten years old, as this one is, then you're shafted if you're in the UK.
I did warn him not to go newer than an E36 when he bought the thing, but kids won't listen!
On the plus side, I've found a nice sequence of photos for him. All just cutting and welding from above, and he has mates who weld for a living, so I think that's as far as I'm going to get involved.

If its 10 years under and has full BM history then its FOC. Still worth having a go at them though as it is a common fault on these specific models. Otherwise there are repair kits available and just needs welding in to eliminate the problem.
