e39 540 touring cooling problem???

Hi All,
hope someone can give me a little help??
I have an 1997 e39 540 touring...it has started to to over heat a bit this morning temp gauge went up to 3/4!! when taking the wife to work about 150 mile of duel carrage way driving (70-80 mph) the coolant was a little low so it topped it up ..now the temp gauge keeps going between 1/2-3/4..the coolant seems to be at the required level??
also the haeter stopped working for a while and after that it would only blow out hot air!!.....heater seems ok now!!!

The cooling system on E39 V8's is notoriously fragile. Does the air con fan work? This is essential - if it doesn't cut in and out, it will run hot although that's mainly in warmer weather.
If the heater stopped working, that sounds like an air lock or it could be the water pump on its way out.
