Viper2 Chip Help
Moderator: martauto
I recently bought a viper 2 chip to put in my 86 320i (pre decrome), got the install instructions off here followed etc
But one main diff was when i got the ecu from under the steering wheel it looked different, it didnt have any retaining clips to hold it together it had three eyletts which i had to break to get in and see the gubbins, ecu plug was the same etc.
Got in side the ecu and compared to the pic it was 100% diff there was no raised socket to exchange the chip etc
Now the only thing i think it could be is that when they did the face lift, think from 88 onwards, that they updated the ecu's so they could be updated, and obviously pre that date i.e mine isnt able to have the upgrade.
Is this right? can i just get an ecu off ebay from a newer car and exchange?
Nice one

You have a Jetronic ECU dude, only the facelift M20 B20 are motronic.
Basically either your ECU number given was incorrect or theres a mix up somewhere down the line perhaps ??
Contact Chipped UK direct for aftersales on this, only Jayson will be able to assist further than the above.

Sorry Dude, no worky like that! Motronic and Jetronic are totally different. Motronic doesn't use a conventional distributor, Jetronic does.BigChris wrote:Is this right? can i just get an ecu off ebay from a newer car and exchange?
You could find a scrapper with a Motronic engine and swap everything associated with the ignition/injection systems, but it would be a lot of work just to make use of the chip you bought. Better having a word with Jayson at ChippedUK I would have thought.

Is that because he has the wrong chip or are saying the Viper2 chips arnt that good?!bryang wrote:Try n get your money back
Youd get more of performance gain by taking your spare wheel and back seats out that by fitting that...
Im saying that because on an otherwise stock engine you aint going to get any appreciable gain out of your car by a chip...some claim up to 20BHP..being realistic your going to get 5-10 max BHP which your not going to "feel" on a car the weight of an e30massive wrote:Is that because he has the wrong chip or are saying the Viper2 chips arnt that good?!bryang wrote:Try n get your money back

Your better off with a re-map, esp if the cars modified, even then you wont get a lot of a gain in outright BHP
I know, my car has been re-mapped...id rather have spent the money on a tank of fuel and a night on the town to be honest..
the above applies only to N/A engines, turbo's are a different matter
Make the car lighter and you will feel and see some real performance gains in acceleration and handling
id even suggest that if your car hasnt been serviced recently you'd gain more by having that done than a chip fitted
Ive one E30 owner having his cars re-mapped with leaking inlet manifolds and split intakes...madness!
Early jet cars aren't really chip tunable, the ECU is so basic it's hardly worth changing it.Jimbob wrote:A chip would make a noticable difference, ask 90% of owners on here tbh.
The motronic on the other hand responds very well to different ECU software, gains of 5-10bhp maybe but the improvement in drivability is the most noticeable gain here.
No offence but using your 90% figure of people who are happy with their chip, 89% want to believe its made a difference, you could unplug and re-install the original chip and they would be have noticed a Ԛ“differenceԚâ€a.Jimbob wrote:A chip would make a noticable difference, ask 90% of owners on here tbh.
Of that remaining 89%, only a small % go ahead and have their car tested to see if the claims made by these Ԛ“tuningԚâ€a companies do actually result in a gain.
Thats why so many companies make a good living selling tat to performance car enthusiasts.(note, im not saying your Viper chip is tat!)
You know the sort, cheap n nasty induction kit 10-15BHP +chip 20BHP+,Ԛâ€asportsԚâ€a exhaust 10BHP, then the proud owner claims he has a 150MPH E36 318 for exampleԚ…
I did have my car tested after its remap, I certainly noticed increased driveability , especially when cold and I too was a believer and thought id gained BHP, which I hadnÔš'tԚ…..id lost it..
If you ever attend a rolling road or test day youll find as many disappointed people as happy ones.
If your serious about improving the performance AND handling, the cheapest way is to make it lighterԚ…If you can go without the luxuries of course!
Sounds good, my mates can walk into town. The lazy fat gits could do with some exercise! If your serious about improving the performance AND handling, the cheapest way is to make it lighterԚ…If you can go without the luxuries of course!

Bryang has a point with his comments, everyone wants it to go better and the arse dyno is quite easily knocked out of calibration when you've emptied your wallet on Go faster goodies.
As alwyas when tuning , get the car checked to be 100% perfect as STOCK before lashing Ԛ£Ã”šÃ‚£Ãƒ”šÃ‚£ on going faster, you'd not be the first to chip, pipe TB etc etc and be dissapointed with the dyno results, without a prior referance dyno you'll be none the wiser whan it comes to the big question.... Whats wrong there then ??

Here is what I heard from a BMW mechanic. May be worth trying...
In the L-jets there should be two chips - one is "start" chip and the other is controlling everything else like rev limitations etc. So he suggests to take a "start" chip from another ECU and install it on the place ot the "normal" one in order to have two "start" chops. Sounds magic to me, he pretends it woll work. Anyone with programming background? Any opinions...?
