My uncle was in Manchester on a bussiness trip and was staying at the lodge near the TRAFFORD CENTRE.
We where invited to go for dinner last night and i was in 2 minds as to take a taxi or drive down.
My motorsport is of the road now and on sorn but is still moted and insured.
We had a nice evening me and the girlfriend i did not drink of course,i then showed my uncle my car as he has the lastest range rover which is very nice.
I was showing him how the roof works and he said why do you not drive home with the top down it was 1030 so it was not raining [only applies if you live in manchester lol].He took a few pics of the car and we said our goodbyes.
I got a few strange looks me driveing with the top down but hey it was fun and its what convertibles are made for.
I was nearly home at the worsley roundabout just about to enter, when a bmw police car touring comes around and pulles over i then go past him holding my thumbs.
At the exit there is a bus stop and he came up behide me with all the lights flashing and horns beeping.
I pulled over, now i am sh1tting it as my tax has run out at the end of last month.
He stayed in the car for 5 minutes then got out and checked over the car he noticed the tax disc so i came clean and i told him why and the reason that the car was in use.
He then asked me to turn the car off,and asked me why my fog lights where on i told him i had them on for some pictures that my uncle took and forgot to turn em off
He then told me to start the car up again and turn em off which i did.
He then says very nice car and i can see that it does not get much use so be on your way and goodnight.
No fine no producer nothing.
I think he must of been a bmw fan as he was driving one, even though it was a company car lol [police car]
Am i lucky or what.
Is it a fixed fine form the police or points or both when they pull you over with no tax?

Cheers

hi mate, its a fixed penalty of Ԛ£60 for no tax, but no points. but if hed charged you with it you would have had to sign the ticket, so looks like you got off with it :D you dont need 7 day producers any more as the police computer has your mot and insurance details on it. :D

IIRC road tax is not a police matter (although they do note and report it)...It is an Excise offence (tax) and they can hit you with a fine of up to Ԛ£1000 for using or keeping an unlicenced vehicle on the road...

Sounds like you got lucky, all the same...

i got a fixed penalty from the police for no tax when i had just bought my car but the insurance covernote had not came through, the chief superintendant cancelled it when i explained the situation, so it definately is a police matter, although the dvla also issue a fine on top of the fixed penalty, but that was cancelled on the polices advice also.

I'm sure the police only know details of the 'new' style MOT's if you've got an old MOT then I'm sure the details aren't on record anywhere... of course i could be wrong. The cops definitely have access to every ones insurance details !

the big financial hit comes when caught with no tax if the car hasn't been used for a year or two.
On top of any fines, etc, thet also claim all the back tax, back to when it was last taxed.

This happened to me last year , was selling an old Golf GTI that was on a SORN , I was stopped on the short test drive close to my house (that itself was very unlucky as I've not seen a police car for years ! ). He looked around it as I explained the situation and seemed interested in the car as he'd had a few GTI's himself , he let me go and said dont make a habbit of it and I couldn't believe my luck ! , until a fine arrived two wks later ! .
