Taking the fun out of driving
Moderator: martauto
I'm old for a Zoner (56)
Built and finished my 2.7, 4 door this year (what else would an old man drive)
35 years without a speeding fine
But I have had 9 points this year alone, all for under 40 MPH
and all in a crappy 1.6 astra estate caught on mobile camera.
The 2.7 has a 4.1 diff and is wicked, but now I just can't enjoy it.
Putting in a 3.54 diff next week to slow things down.
I just don't think I can drive like a Morris Minor owner for the next three years!
Anyone else with high points and how do you cope with the strain?
P.S. Anyone got a nodding dog for my back window and a trilby?
And NO you can't have it. If I can't enjoy it - etc.

Luxorbeige and proud of it!
i think you can buy devices such as road angel which tell you where the cameras are so you are less likely to get caught. some better than others. tomtom units can have traffic cameras installed as well, but not sure if they can pick up laser mobile units. i had an origin b2 years ago which did just about everything including "specs"...... a good unit will cost a bit, but better than a ban!

Bloody youngsters!
I'm 60,with a 2.7 in a cabbie. The nodding dog fell out of the 4 door car due to rust,so the engine found a new home.
Your 4.1 diff will not last long, you need a 3.64 medium case jobbie.

and a radar/laser detector!
TomTom does well with its "safety cameras" option, but you get false positives from the well known mobile van type sites - unless there's actually a van there in which case it's great.
It is all legal too because it runs from a database and doesn't actually detect the cameras. Or Something.

update!
for the last 3 days I have been driving exactly to the speed limit. Even done 20 in the 20 MPH zones at 7.30 am
I can tell you this, I am on my own, no other silly bugger is doing it.
I had to pull over twice to let the twenty or so cars behind me go. I feel such a prat!
I had a speed camera locator in the car each time I was caught, but because they were mobile units in new locations, no warnings.
I feel that I am now driving with more danger than I was before, 'cause now I am watching speed signs and not giving full attention to the road conditions.
Bare in mind that I am driving most of the time in rural Wales, not built up areas.
I only hope my 180 quid is spent wisely at the Police Christmas Party, it will make me feel so much better about hateing driving for the next 3 years.
To say farewell to the 4.1 diff, I screwed the arse off the car last night on a private track. by the weekend the diff will be under the bench in the workshop for 3 years and the 3.45 goes in.

reminds me of those Australian insurance claims that Jasper Carrot used to read out.

Funnily enough, I accrued 9 points in my first E30, a 1984 320i moredoor. I had to sell it and revert back to the 1970 Morris Minor Traveller that I am still trundling around in today - and I've never had any points in all the time (20 years) I've owned it.
So my advice is...
"drive like a Morris Minor owner for the next three years!"

Mobile scameras are the scum of the earth, a radar detector WILL NOT SAVE YOU, by the time the detector has picked up the signal the speed camera already has its reading of your speed and a picture of you.
Take the front number plate off, break it into pieces and put it in the boot.
Tint the windows, keep the visors down and wear sunglasses to reduce the chance of a photo identifying you.
Remove any identifying items from the car, stickers in the windows, badges etc.
You dont have to keep to the speed limit everywhere, this is crazy and dangerous, best to keep with a group of cars which will reduce your chances of being zapped should you find a scamera around the next bend, its much easier/safer to speed around traffic if you dont want to get caught. (I sure hope this last part was read by one of those 'persons' referred to as traffic police)

i got my first points in a 1.2 corsa c. little over 4 years ago now. deserved it tho i think 91 mph on a motorwayhmmmm. i didn't even know they could go that fast. jk. To slow down my driving i went go-karting. that way i was able to rag the ass off the karts and not worry about the police. greta fun too.
325i SPORT M-TECH 1(sold

)daimlerman, often. The last ticket was a three quarters shot of the rear of the M3 from the L/H/S and showed a completely empty car, the c pillar hiding the actual driver. I tried protesting it but they simply said that as the owner I should know who was driving at the time. So I sent of my wife's license. I honestly think I could have sent anyone's/stolen license and as long as they got the money they don't care.
Best thing about karts is you generally don't have to worry about the karts either! Rag the s**t out of them and if you crash...big dealmosh86 wrote:i got my first points in a 1.2 corsa c. little over 4 years ago now. deserved it tho i think 91 mph on a motorwayhmmmm. i didn't even know they could go that fast. jk. Best bit of advice I can give - put a sign in the rear window saying
"Sorry lads - 9 points"
That way you will get LOADSA sympathy and no -one will tailgate/hoot/flash lights
btw I'm 66 and have been lucky only ever to have had 3 points which dropped off in May

As I get older I realize that you can't please everyone - pissing everybody off is however a piece of cake
Now this is a good bit of advice. One bumper sticker being made as we speak.ivqii wrote:Best bit of advice I can give - put a sign in the rear window saying

Coming up to 58, with just the single 3pts for speeding.
In a poxy Vauhall combi of all things
Tbh, i actually enjoy my
driving a lot more now, no pressure to race etc, also a lot more selective as to when i do drive a
bit harder now.
Not sure otherroad users share my feelings though.
Will very soon be having my 325i converted to a 2.8 stroker, so not
quite ready for the Horlicks just yet.
