I think black on facelifts red looks good. I just done it with mine. Chrome just doesnt look right unless its on a chromie.

I do like it now with the chrome grill, have been wondering about indicators as i have a spare orange set, i just think orange clashes with red and looks a bit ugly! hmmmm

I'm all for the chrome grill and wouldnt have my chromie any other way. But facelifts are made to be changed, and black on red looks the business.

Top by far, but lose the eyebrows and keep the tinted indicators as per bottom pic.

GB plates ruin way too many otherwise spot on cars. That blue is hideous and totally buggers the symmetry.

when facelifted they changed everything that was chrome to black.. but not the kidney!!

It depends on how old you are for this one as I was unaware of the E30 at that age...


I dont remember it being the 'in thing'as I didnt even have a license until 2006... So it doesnt count unless you was on the road in the 90's... And if thats the case, your getting on a bit anyway.

Yeah but my point is, we dont remember it ever being 'the in thing' when you say it was. So we cant associate it with the '90's chavness' that you speak of.

On a non-chromie, chrome grills actually more often than not look chavvy to me. The only explanation I can think of for this is the abundance of ratty unmodified E30s on the council estates around where I grew up.

Black grills look less chavvy to me but way more boyyed up. This can be done tastefully or not so tastefully.

It's impossible to have a blanket rule for this sort of thing though, some cars suit chrome grills, some cars suit black grills.

If black grills were OEM, a lot of you would be changing your opinion I reckon, so there's no point saying "Chrome" just because it's OEM, he already knows it's OEM, he wants to know what actually looks best on his particular car.

One thing I've never understood on this forum is why the chrome lovers are so passionate about converting everyone else to go chrome. If everyone else went chrome how would you guys stand out anymore?

For some, this is the first thing they mess about with on their e30, for others its the last.

My opinion is to get a black oil cooler grille insert, ASAP

Then play around with clear/smoked turns, and chrome/black grilles until you are happy.

Ps. You could never have expected a definitive answer with this post surely!?
