am picking this up at the weekend and am worried about the wiring nightmare that could be.

Does anyone know if the m3 loom was just plug and play into a 328??

the s50 is nearly plug and play in the 328, just one wire to be added i believe! it's a different story if its going into a e30 :D i was watching that car, and if it turns out to be a good engine it was a bargain!!!! i doubt the 328i ecu would run the s50.

What do I need to look out for when collecting the car apart from a rattling bottem end?

clean oil is usually a good sign. give it a good run then with the bonnet open hold the revs at around 3k for 10 seconds then let it return to idle, if it growls at you the vanos is worn. it's not the end of the world nowadays and i would expect this car to do exactly that. if it runs well and does not knock you "should" be OK :D
