pre-86 kick panel retrofit

I've got the older carpet covered side kick panels in my front footwells with grubby arsed carpet full of mud ' n ' rubbish, and I would like to put a set of the plastic kick panels / front speaker grills in there instead.

Does anyone know if it can be done? Like has the area under the dash been changed between the carpet and plastic models, and how difficult is it do stick the things in?

I can get a pair of them in black (painted) and door cards / handles from a newer car that would go quite nicely in an exchange for a bmw stock radio (which I am currently changing).
