This is where theory and practice part company, will!willnz wrote:, just use 2 longish 6mm bolts in each hole and screw them in evenly. They will pull the pump out.
99 times out of a 100, the lugs will just break off.
Lots of violence and swearing is what's required for one that is well planted in. A big pair of stilsons on the body of the pump may get it rotating in the block if you're lucky.
A three foot length of garden hose, with one end stuck in my ear is my favourite for locating noises.

You must just be lucky then ive had a noght mare with all the M40 water pumps ive taken off. Normally involves a big hammer to get it outwillnz wrote:Have done it many times Brian, never had them break yet, maybe my guardian angel is more powerful than yours???![]()
(But I always free it first by tapping it on the side of the pulley mounting until I see it move, then use the bolts...)

If you are taking the belt off anyway it's relatively quick and easy to take the cam out as well (don't mix up the order you remove things as they have to go back matching the same way) and take the lifters out. When they are fresh you should be able to squeeze them easily between finger and thumb to compress them. Close them up in a vice if they are tight (usually will be full of stale oil crud) and it should sort them out for another while.
