850ci cluster problem

just bought a 1993 850ci manual (because it was cheap) really original car the only thing is none of the gauges work i.e fuel rev counter temp gauge,and the mid (digital mileage display) the cluster lights up and all the other lights work i.e eml abs and asc, i have hunted all over the net and cannot find a definative answer, the only thing i have found is that it is controlled by a black box called an ekm, i have checked this out and the next thing will be to replace it , just wondered if anyone have had any dealings with 8 series or this problem thanks
