M30 6 or 7 series for swap?

Can some kind soul please clarify if the 6 or 7 series m30b35 engine can be used for a swap and reasons why the 5 series e34 is a better option (if this is the case).
I got this from Wiki :

You can use the 7 series with no problems but im not sure about the 6 series, the engine will be the same but the sump may be different
There's a nice 535i sport manual on ebay now,iirc he wants about £800 BUT the sport will break well

Those bits alone are worth £4-500 plus any other bits you sell,my donor car was a sport and i made around £600+

Thanks leeparkes. I guess that explains why most people go the 5 series route.

Quick b*llocking from the missus. Have to sell my Fireblade to keep the peace as I promised i'd get rid of my scooter before buying it and i've still got that (summer ride only).
Know anybody interested? Black 06 plate. Black leather tank cover. scottoiler. Minto. Bought for £6300 in the summer looking for 6 although the time of year is keeping the price for that model lower at the mo.

Bike not up on the trader yet but I did go for a drive to just about every car sales lot I know of and I did find a 735i in west london for dirt and I mean dirt cheap.
Is there anything that needs doing differently with this swap vs using a 535i sport lump?

mine was indeed from a 735i. the ONLY reason to use a E34 535i over a E32 735i is the increased chance of finding a manual donor car. manual boxes are hard to find.
the engine from a auto 735i will have seen an easy life though. chances are a manual 535i will have been thrashed

hehe, i want to the effort of getting a 98k FSH E32 735i auto donor car so it's got a sweet engine, then thrash the feck out of it every day!

There are differences between the E12 / E24 / E28 (7, 6 and five series) M30 and the E32 / E34 (7 and five series).
The sump and oil pick-up pipe from an E32 / E34 is needed to clear the front cross-member.
The earlier engines also had a coolant pipe across the rear of the cylinder head which limits space by the bulkhead, and I think they had the crank sensor on the gearbox bellhousing which is also tight for space.
E34 535i manual is the easiest donor to start with every time!

Ive just remembered, isnt there something to do with the auto TPS hitting the bonnet

Yes, it is very tight.
The manual TPS doesn't stick up quite as far.
They are interchangeable though, with a few little wiring mods.

yep, mine had an auto TPS and rubbed the bonnet - just.
i fitted a manual one. the auto has extra wires and a different plug so it's a case of chopping the plug off and soldering the new one on when you swap over. the other wires run to the auto gearbox/ecu so can be left disconnected.

when my auto one was rubbing, there was about 3mm between the steering rack and the sump

Auto TPS, AFM, Pipes clearing cross members, rubbing auto's and tight spaces between racks and sumps. You're all motor mad, or sex mad dependant on how you read that
Does sound though like the 535i is a fair bit easier than the others though. Having said that it's not going to be me fitting it together. Rav has offered his services (or rather he's a man who knows a man). If those sides are too far I see that Ant isn't far from me at all though I didn't get a reply when I mailed him. Do you think that with regards to getting somebody to do the work the price would defo go up if I go for the more laborious route or would it more likely be one price all in?

Its not rubbing bad, i noticed where the AFM cap has rubbed a little bit of paint off from under the bonnet, ill grab a pic tomorrow of it

Only addition to mention here is that some of the E32 735i's came with a fly by wire throttle - EML in BMW parlance. In my experience, EML dislikes being moved into a car with no E32 dash and possibly missing traction control sensors.
If you are going E32, make sure it has an old fashioned cable throttle.

With the early 6 and 5 engine you will have 2 issues.
1. the sump will and pickup will be needed from the e34.
2. the back of the head has a water pipe conection which you will need to get the blank for(e34 again) or sit in position 1 or 2(just)
e32 and e34 maual are the easy way and you will have all that you need apart from the mount's and getting the prop cut and shut.
And btw i'm using beefy's mount's too, with no issues.

Mine is in posistion 3 pretty much, and still retains the water pipe at the back of the head.. And the stock 325 prop works, swap the 2.5 output flange onto the 3.5 gearbox and it'll bolt up.zaust wrote:

i will be happy if o take it from the E24 635CSi
Mine came out of an EML 735i.... I just used a different TB (from a non EML car) and added one fitting to the bottom of the intake manifold (EML intake manifold lacks 1 small fitting for the vacuum line vs non eml manifold).
It doesn't matter if you get it from an E32 or E34 car, auto or 5 speed. You can easily swap the harness / tb / manifold as needed.

Used a regular AFM from a b35, and a 179 DME. Harness on the engine was cut when it was pulled so I sourced another harness (manual or automatic both work fine, it's just the automatic TPS sits higher than manual tps) Really the only major difference was a lack of small vacuum line fitting on the bottom of the manifold for the intake boot "T".
