I have a bit of a dilema which to some may seem abit anal but thats the way i am with my car!

I am about to have a pair of highback recaro seats and a standard rear bench with head rests and arm rest retrimmed in black nappa leather for my car and i cant decide on weather to have the seams double stitched or piped.

On saloons and tourings leather and cloth interiors have piping on the seams with cabrios and M3's having double stitch

Looking at pics of highback recaros in original factory trim it apears that leather trimed ones are piped and cloth ones are stitched although the cloth rear seats are still piped so a mix of the two.

Strickly speaking for originality OEM purposes i should have them piped front and rear but double stitch looks far better imo and is possibly more durable.

I cant fookin decide! :banghead:

Double stitching looks like a much better option, piping looks a bit tacky.

i really really hate piping on seats, to me it just screams tacky retrim, even though the above shows it was standard on some seats

a proper double stitched seam is a work of art, piping just looks like a stuck on bodge to cover a poor job (and always wears through and looks tatty quickly)
cheers,

Piping imo, as its what it would have been if you had speced highbacks from new.

Although in my 1985 brochure it says Highbacks were not available in leather, only fabric?

Your answer is in what you say Barry, you know you don't like stuff that isn't OEM. So stitching may look good but piping is original.

Because i should go piping for completely accurate OEM but stitching looks better!

I can decide and the seats are going to the trimmers tomorrow!

I voted stitched - which is the way I had my Recaros done.
I've got stitched front, piped rear.
Piping is sooooooo 1950's!
This is why I no longer drive an E30......

Well, the main thing is getting the seats trimmed, i reckon if you just get the double stitching for now, piping can be added at a later date if you wish. Might be wrong!

What will bother you more when you sit on them?
Having them stiched and knowing you should a piped them for originality? or piping them and thinking stiched looks better?

You obviously don't like the piped, but your worried about the originality, if you are that concerned about originality, then surely the car shouldn't have recaros, but BMW sport seats, and an M-tech front valence etc etc.

Get them double stitched for gods sake!

This is true but recaros and alpina parts were options available to my car.

Double stitched leather recaros were not!

But the seats going in for a retrim wasn't exactly an option available to your car but you're still doing it!

Now go get them stitched and be done with. You know it's going to look the bollocks.

stitched if you don't like it then you can add piping at a later stage.

You not using an m3 rear bench seat ?

Black leather recaros were an option. They may be retrimmed but the car has been repainted to.

No, standard rear bench as an M3 bench wasnt an option on a sport.

I can't believe what I'm reading here. Double stitching is an option tomorrow, make it happen, pretend it's 1990, and your optioning your E30's interior.
