tick tick tick ticking

Hello boys, mate of mine bought a 86 325i Auto on the weekend, good car for the money, 1 prob, there is a ticking noise from the engine, it's there at idle and at higher rpm. Set the valves today and it's not that, was wondering if it could be a injector?? Dont think it's internal, its only got 86000miles with full BMW service history, so it' been looked after.We both work on diesels so are not too clued up on that funny petrol stuff

Any ideas would be great!!

maybe the exhaust manifold gasket isnt sat right, or mabey as u said the injectors are ticking really badly.

im not too sure about it all though, as i have a (in my opinion) very noisey m20 and i think if it doesnt quieten right down after i change everything from the manifold to the back box, then i reckon the engine is a lost cause
