just out of curiosity, do all 6 pots have rear brake discs, and if so are they all the same? and also do all 4 pots have rear drums?

cheers :)

Doesn't seem to be any pattern, some 320i saloons have drums, some have discs, all 4 pot saloons have drums, but 4 pot tourings have discs, same with the cabs.

my 2p worth

find a car with a nice clean rust free shell in preference to anything else, unless u very good at bodywork! once rust taken hold it takes a lot of work/money to fix properly.

i found a 316i with a buggered engine and no rust/paintwork needed for around Ԛ£100

rear discs are a bolt on job. cost me about Ԛ£50 for the parts including new handbrake cables and a stress free good fun morning's work!

u want any help about the m30 conv just ask, happy to help if i can

Hi Toby... where you get the disks for that price?? that would make a nice addition to my brothers 320 instead of crappy drums seen as its got a strut brace and will be lowered somewhat when i finish the gb swap?!?!

mind you, I need to get the gearbox out first! Still not got it out as I have had some STUBBON as hell bolts and i cant get the gear level out, even after 3-4 hours trying so I am going to attempt to remove the box with the lever still on *measured it up and it SHOULD go!* only one bit had to be angle grinded off so far and that was a heat shield so not a biggie!

:gay: drink more coffee and get more angry that usually works for me!

jon it's the passenger side front tow eye cover i'm after for my m535i so happy to give u some cash for it if u have no luck selling the complete kit.

what i meant about the brakes was, i got a complete Sport rear subframe for Ԛ£30 secondhand, discs included. need new handbrake cables as different for disc and drum, Ԛ£20.

not worth it tbh unless upgrade engine, rear drums are fine.

anyway going outside to spray my remaining 2 wheels black. fingers crossed it goes ok as i not totally sober

ahh, cool cool, not like I need any more work to do on it. i am off down to start work early on tomorrow to try and get things finished. i did notice the different sides have black and silver wheels, definately think the black looks better, interesting time of day to be spraying wheels mind you!

I feel there will be much anger at the fact thats its friday tomorrow so work on saturday... the gearbox doesn't stand a change against me now! hahaha.

As for the towing eye, will keep you informed.. there are some going on ebay, a set of three but i cant remember which one from the front it is and it also includes two side ones which you dont need.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-E28-M535I-SID ... dZViewItem

if this italian guy doesnt come through you can have the one from my blue 535 as I would have to spray the red ones to match mine anyway, i might as well do both at the same time.

good luck with the wheels! :D

cheers for that re the tow cover, am fed up of paint spraying  . obviously happy to pay what u want for it if available. those bodykits are odd, only got 70 for the one from my breaker. often easier to sell if u split em anyway.

if i wasn't pissed b4 i am now cos of the paint fumes. looking good though just hope my drunken masking of the rim holds up against the black paint!

can't u just grind the gear link bar off?! hate to repeat myself but take it u have dropped the box down as far as u can including loosening engine mounts before trying to remove the linkage? always helps.

yeah, done that. Its not the link bar itself (although that was a BLOODY pain to get out) its the actual lever that sticks up through the center console. In the orange 320 the lever is held in with a circlip from thetop and lifts out when disconnected from the linkage... in the red one, there is a turn to unlock thing underneath the car but without the special BMW tool you cant do it... tried it with the suggested screwdrivers as in the haynes manual but that doesn't work, its ceased up! stupid thing... looks like its going to come out thought with the gear level still attached, and if i have to grind it... no matter cos its a f**ked box n e way.

You wouldn't believe how much different the two 320's are even thought they are both pre-facelift though. The red one meets the bell housing alot better, and has completely different bolts in, it uses torx head bolts instead of normal 6 face bolts... strange but it should all fit with the older box. The newer one also has slightly different heat shields amoung many things. I also have a couple of plans for how to get the older box back onto engine so lets hope it works!

Time for sleep I think.. I have GOT to get that sod out tomorrow morning and the new one in by mid afternoon so I can drop her down and do the suspension at the front! if you can think of anything else you might need from the 5 and fancy a trip back up.. your more than welcome! haha

All 325is and 318is have rear discs, and so do all cars equipped with ABS. And AFAIK, they're all the same.

thanks for offering to help but i wasnt really considering the conversion, (at the moment anyway, im going to way up all my options come new car time in the spring :D ) i just seen that engine for sale and thought "hmmmm....". so the brake conversion isnt too big a job? what about solid to vented front discs, is that straight forward too?

cheers for all the replys chaps
