What is the Long range fuel tank option on new E30s? Was it just a 325i tank or something even bigger, oh and where might you find one now, the stealers for a big sum of Ԛ£?

Hi,
The long range fuel tank was fitted to the E30 M3 models to give a reasonable fuel range with the higher consumption engine, it consisted of a boot mounted tank that fitted tight up to the rear seat area and across the whole width, approx 20 litres extra fuel quantity, the sytem just used the existing fuel level guage, it just took 20 litre longer for the guage to start moving away from full.
If you remove the boot carpet on late model cars you should be able to see a 50mm dia' "knock out" hole in the boot floor, it's about 300mm right of centre and about 100mm rearward from the boot/seat panel.
The metal filler pipe to the under floor tank was in a "Y" section, this makes it possible to fill both tanks from the one filler neck.
Try finding a scrap E30 M3 or somebody who is converting a race car maybe.

Go for a LPG conversion - gives me another 200 miles range with no loss of boot space ( tank fits in spare wheel well), and the car runs for 7p/mile. This is on my M20B25 Touring. The M50 engined one is next.

So where do you put the spare wheel?

When's the last time you needed one? I think I've had more blown headgaskets than punctures.
I have a spacesaver spare wheel which normally lives on the boot floor ( came from a Volvo), and I also cary a couple of cans of aerosol tyre sealant/inflator.

Fair enough.
I have one of these fuel tanks in the back of an M3 I have just purchased. They are neatly packaged.
If you are interested then I will look into it more with a possibility of selling it.

Oh it actually takes up some of the boot!
I guess grabbing a space saver and cans of moose can be sufficent, i aint had a punture in 4yrs of driving.
Guess i'll settle for a 325i fuel tank when this one gives up the ghost then (car was built off a 316i shell, rubbish range on this engine lol)
