Ews? What is it?

Can someone please explain what it is and why its a hassle when doing an m50/52 convertion?

EWS = Elektronische Wegfahr Sperre = Immobiliser in plain english.
You need the control box, the ring antenna and the key from the donor engine's car to make it work if you are going to use the BMW ECU

EWS=engine won't start....
The key contains a transponder that talks to the antenna ring,this passes the request to the ECW via the EWS control module and the EWS connector block.If all components like the transponder they are kind enough to allow the ECU to supply fuel and a spark.
Once installed correctly

system is self checking and works perfectly.Even if a correctly fitting key is used,the engine will not start,only way round it is to swap the complete system.
