Hey everyone,

Not posted for a while, but I've got to get my E30 ready for sale now, as I'm moving out of the country soon, and I have a slight problem...

Basically, as some of you may have read, I bought my E30, and the headgasket promptly gave up, shortly after, I was made redundant.

I did all the work myself, had the head skimmed, cleaned and valves done whilst it was off, fitted a new water pump, timing belt and tensioner, amongst other bits.

However, since doing this, due to lack of funds, I've not had the drive to finish things off properly, and the one thing that'll be stopping me from selling it, is the water that still remains in the oil!

So i'm wondering what the best way to get rid of this is?

I've been told I could pour petrol through (with the rocker cover off and sump plug out) and this will remove the nasty oily/watery mess that resides in my engine?

Is this advisable? Or is there a better method of attack?

Once this is done, she'll be up for sale, along with all the spare parts, wheels, etc etc.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated, as always.

Thanks in advance,

Oggy

Drain all the oil out let it dip itself dry over night then refill with fresh oil then let it idle and check no further head gasket leaks. If compression is up and even and no signs of mayo it should be ok.

Will that get rid of all the mess? I can't see the mayo dripping out of it's own accord?

Compression is up, and it'll run right, it's just the mess that's in the oil I'm not happy with!

I would try flushing oil,use as the supplier/maker suggests.Or fill with cheap oil,run for 100 miles or so and change oil/filter again.
In theory, just running the engine at operating temp for a while should evaporate the water out, but a couple of changes may help.
I found it more difficult to get the oil out of the cooling system!

Daimlerman, I can't run it anywhere due to no insurance, and I'm a little unsure as to whether or not a potential buyer would be happy with me supplying oil and filter with the suggestion that it'll want changing again in a couple of hundred miles or so.

I've just dropped the oil now after running it to temperature, and it's come out a fantastic Baileys colour!

The cooling system was a complete arse, it took me an entire day of sending water through the system to remove the traces from the radiator, I think I've finally cracked it, with all but the very smallest amount visible, and no more has appeared since, so fingers crossed it's all been successful!

The other slight issue I have is that it seems to struggle to pick up on the first touch of the accelerator, but then revs freely and fine once it's going, it's just the initial few revs? Seems to me like air is getting in somewhere the air flow meter isn't registering?

Any ideas on that one?

Thanks again for the suggestions :D

I would give it a good run to make sure everything is upto its proper temperature to be sure that any remaining water is evaporated out... Try a site like www.dayinsure.com

During my search for an E30 I walked away from 2 for no other reason than water in the oil so getting it all out needs doing if you want it to attract a good price.

i would drain out whats in there straight away, if it's full of water you dont really want it pumping around.

fill with any cheapo oil. a basic mineral will do. just let it run till the engines hot, give it some revs now and then, then drain out and put some half decent oil in.

as long as there's no more water getting into the oil it should evaporate off through the breather system once the car startes being used.

i wouldnt flush petrol through, as it'll strip any oil residue out of the shells etc so they will run metal to metal when it's first started afterwards 8O
cheers,

harry

Stonsie, I appreciate that, but unfortunately I don't have the money to insure it full stop!
Hence it being sat there doing nothing, rather than me enjoying driving it!

I'll be honest, I'm not expecting top dollar for it, i'll admit it's a little rough around the edges,(I bought it with the intention of going sideways) I'm just looking to get back as close to what it's cost me really, but given the current economic climate, I'm not getting my hopes up.

Harry, I've drained what was in it now, and have left it with a drip tray and the sump plug out so that whatever is going to come out of it's own accord, will do, and I've got some oil and a new filter to give it once that's sorted.

The whole affair is a little frustrating, I did a thorough check over everything when I bought it, and there was no sign of headgasket failure whatsoever, the cap was clean, the oil seemed right, water was fine etc, I think I was just unlucky, shame really, given it's the only E30 i've owned that still had a BMW engine!
