im in the middle of this swap, and by far the easiest/cheapest/safest way is to buy a whole running e36 m3!!! they are cheapish, and you can break the rest to recover most, if not more than the of cost of the m3. you will need to keep, engine/box compleate with loom, all ancillarys, ecu, ews? manifolds
, rad, header tank and all the hoses, oil cooler and hoses, maf, air box? gear selectors and a few bits i cant rember. plus MANY other bmw and custom parts£££££££!!! do a proper search on here and all will be revealed.

IMO .. the S50 swapp is the easiest swapp and cost a lot less than S38
I have S38B38,, and would never reccommend that,,
very €€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€€
also it is very thirsty,, also on oil
the S50 engine is so throttle responsive and the fuel-econemy is a lot bettar vs S38B3x
S50B3x = fantastic engine in a E30
