When I put the air con on it makes the car really jerky to drive, even at 50-60mph. A slight lift of the throttle feels like i have applied the brakes. Any Ideas?

Just some guesses:
Magnetic clutch, perhaps has seized in some way, or the bearings in the compressor making it much harder to turn.
Electronics which control the engine when the A/C is on failed so the ECU doesn't control the engine with it on?
Bear in mind that the compressor cuts in and out thermostatically when the A/C is on, so I reckon that's what the jerking is, the cutting in combined with maybe one of the above?
As I say, just guesses, maybe point you in the right direction tho?

Another thought, seeing as the AC belt is at the front, take it off then drive the car with the AC switched on. Of the course the pump wont be running, but it might help diagnose an electronic problem.
