e30 325i fuel pump location external or in tank ?

It's in the tank... Under the rear seat on the drivers side (RHD cars that is) there is a plate. Remove this and you can see the pump and fuel level connectors.
I'm not sure about the diesels, they might have an electric lift pump to the high pressure fuel pump..

even petrol models can have dual pumps , 1 in tank is a low pressure (lift up) and the one outside side is the main high pressure pump , have a look under the car if you see a pump like this
then you got dual pump set up , if not then its got the single pump in the tank like this 
then you got dual pump set up , if not then its got the single pump in the tank like this

you are right sir. car has external pump too

Change over from two pumps to one was shortly after the introduction of facelift cars - around the beginning of '88.
