Our family wagon is dead and gone and my wife, Amanda is driving my E30 everyday now, but, she's getting a bit fed up driving a lowered car. I'm thinking of getting a 318tds touring for her. The tax would be nice (tax in Ireland can be very pricey), and hopefully should get good enough mpg. It seems like a pretty sensible move.
Does anyone have experience of them, either good or bad? I'd say they're not too lively, but how do they respond to a remap/chip? What should I be looking out for?
Thanks.

They're absolutely awful, to be avoided. They are dog slow - a 318i will crucify one. The M41 engine is 2/3 of an 325tds engine and they aren't reliable or durable. Most have had a very hard life and you have the usual issues with the injection pump, in tank lift pump etc. On the upside they do 40 mpg but so does a carefully driven 316i. A 318tds might do 45 mpg on a long steady run but they don't do anywhere near the claimed 50 mpg.
Buy an E36 318i Touring - a superb reliable economical car that drives nicely. About the only thing that goes wrong is the head gasket (due to coolant neglect) and they are an easy day's work to do. Check the heater hose on the back of the head as these can go.
