I ended up using mole wrench on an old alt belt to hold it still and a hammer on the spanner. Was a major pain in the rear end but got there in the end.

use a long chisel or similar dude
position it so its on the edge of the nut and strike the end with a hammer so as to drive the nut around on the waterpump shaft.
badly explained I know but you get the gist M8 ?

How do you manage to keep your horse cool outside the workshop in this hot weather?ant wrote:use a long chisel or similar dude
Use a thin 32mm pen ended spanner (common bicycle size), slip the end on the nut with the shaft vertical, and give it a good belt clockwise (from the front), with a lump hammer.
If you still need to stop the pulley turning, then drill a 6mm hole in the end of a piece of flat steel bar, and fix it under one of the pulley retaining bolts.
